@ben: True. True. However, programmers and academics are much more comfortable finding and installing what they want than grandpa. In the end though I think you're right: there's no such thing as a perfect desktop setup for all users.

You fail to understand that a lot of debian users, me included, would rather have less installed be default than more.

"Just Works" is a myth, you cannot have anything just working unless its a bloated mess to support many vastly different users, or only targeting one very specific group of users. For example Ubuntu definitely doesn't "just work" for programmers, no compiler by default. Dosn't just work for many serious academics publishing their latest research, no latex by default.

The real way forward is to make it very customiseible and stable enough so you can try things then remove them later. Debian knows this well.

AG: You're right. You can pretty easily install Beagle, but it'd be nice if Debian came with more of these end-user-friendly features installed by default (for Desktop configurations at least). On the other hand maybe its best that Debian be more popular with power users and Ubuntu can worry about converting the Windows users. :)

If you grab all the required 'mono' pkgs, you'll essentially have all that is required for beagle desktop search application. I'm running it on my Slackware box now.

Wow, that's pretty big news. I'm personally waiting for Ubuntu Feisty, but a lot of people are going to be excited about Etch.
